6 Ways to Update Your Home Exterior

We purchased a 1960's ranch (such a classic!) a year ago and from the second that we purchased it, I tried to figure out ways to update it inexpensively.

These 6 tips outlined below are affordable and made our house look the best one on the block.

Add Window Boxes

Since we purchased our home, I've been trying to figure out how to make it bigger. One of the things that made a huge difference was adding window boxes. I made these custom size to fit the width of the windows. To see more about how I made the window boxes, look here.

Update Exterior Light Fixtures

Quite possibly my favorite transformation we have made to the house is updating our light fixtures to these gorgeous copper ones. They add so much warmth and elegance to the house.

To give off the look of gas, I purchased these light bulbs. They have been absolutely outstanding. They look just like a gas lantern from the street. To purchase, call Circa Lighting.

Wrap Your Columns

Before

After

While the columns looked just fine without the wraps, I wanted to make our ranch feel a little more modern. I had my wonderful woodworker, Nathan wrap these columns. To see the process, look here.

Add Path Lights & Solar Powered Landscape Lighting

I've always loved how a home looks at night. Adding beautiful landscape lighting and up-lights on your home can transform how your home looks in the evening.

After we painted the house, we got rid of our old landscape lights, and replaced them with these copper ones. I also found these amazing puck lights that are solar powered and they act as a great up-light on our home at night. They are super affordable, discreet and give off a lot of light.

Paint Your Brick

I'm in several home groups on Facebook, and there seems to be a lot of anxiety around painting brick. Trying to find the right color, the expense, and wondering if your color selection will go out of style, are a few that come to mind. I have three words: Just Do It! It was one of the best decisions we made. It absolutely transformed our house.

If you follow me on instagram, you probably remember how our neighbors were waving us down to tell us how good the house looked, and 'whisper shouting' to other neighbors that they were going to paint their homes the same color.

I played around with color options and originally planned to go with Alabaster, but after I did more research, I decided on Oyster White. Alabaster comes off a little more white than I wanted, and I was looking for a really creamy tone to add warmth. I am super happy with the results.

Add an Accent Color to Windows and Doors

We painted around the sliding glass door on the deck and it transformed the space. It went from feeling dull to looking like a statement. The door looks modern now and adds a much needed pop to an otherwise boring wall.

I was so afraid to paint our door. I thought the color might be too dark or not compliment the light fixtures well, but I took the leap because the good news is, if it looked bad, we could just paint over it.

I landed on Porpoise for the color and couldn't be happier with the contrast.

I hope these 6 tips will help you as you plan your exterior updates!
