Decisions, decisions.

I began the living room journey with items I had from our previous house and threw them together to “work” for the first two years as I decided on what I wanted my living room space to look like. I have always admired the works of James Farmer, Mark D. Sikes, and Bunny Williams.

As designers, we study our favorite rooms and allow them to inspire us. We use the framework of a room to create something completely fresh. I love the classic Southern warmth that James Farmer creates in his cozy spaces that never seem to tire with age. Mark D. Sikes infuses fresh colors and fabrics creating a fabulous mix of old and new. And then, who could compete with the Queen: Bunny Williams. Her masterful rooms are something truly to study. I love how she is able to mix so many various periods, styles, colors, and shapes to make a truly unique space that always feels upscale and comfortable.

Pattern-Perfect

These design visionaries have not only left an indelible mark on the world of interior design but have also provided invaluable lessons that can guide anyone in creating a comfortable and enduring space. So, when it came to my own living room, I wanted to infuse the lessons I took from studying their works and make them my own. In my research, I discovered that natural fibers like cotton, linen, and wool are ideal choices as they offer a timeless appeal, breathability, and durability.

Mastering the art of pattern mixing can be daunting, but it is a skill that can transform a room into a dynamic and visually engaging space. Bunny Williams, James Farmer, and Mark D. Sikes are renowned for their adeptness in combining various patterns, creating an atmosphere that is simultaneously cohesive and eclectic. I followed their lead by incorporating different patterns in my living room, such as floral, stripes, and geometric motifs. To maintain a sense of unity, I ensured that the patterns shared complementary colors or themes. By doing so, I was able to craft a harmonious and vibrant living room that exudes personality and style.

Timeless Style, Timeless Appeal

One of the most valuable lessons I learned from studying these interior design icons is the importance of creating a space that stands the test of time. Fads and trends come and go, but a well-curated living room should remain visually appealing and relevant for years to come. To achieve this, I focused on selecting classic furniture pieces and neutral color palettes as the foundation of the room's design. This allows for easy updates in the future, such as swapping out accessories or introducing pops of color. By embracing a timeless aesthetic, I can enjoy my living room's style for years without feeling the need for constant updates.

More updates are soon to come, as new items are arriving daily to complete the house. Keep following along here or on instagram as I share the progress of our beautiful Southern home!

xoxo,
Emily
