Remembering Laila
I don’t think anything could have prepared me for the series of events that happened over the course of less than a week. As I sit here writing this, it still doesn’t feel real. Today we lost my best friend and little companion to a battle with cancer. This blog post shares the good times as we remember our sweet baby Lay.
Finding Laila May
One of the first big life decisions I made as a young adult was adopting Laila, my sweet black lab mix. From the moment I laid eyes on her at the Humane Society, I knew she was the one. It was 2013 when I first moved to Atlanta, and little did I know, Laila would fill my life with endless joy, unforgettable memories, and a love that transcended words.
A Fateful Encounter
After weeks of searching for the perfect companion, I found Laila one weekend at the Humane Society. Her gentle demeanor, combined with her sweet and cuddly nature, won my heart instantly. As I held her in my arms, I could sense the connection we shared. There was an undeniable feeling that she was meant to be a part of my life. I brought Laila home, with my now husband, embarking on a journey of dog parenthood that would forever change us.
City Adventures and Simple Pleasures
Our one-bedroom apartment in the heart of Atlanta became a little haven for our new Laila. Despite the city hustle, she found joy in the simplest of things. Car rides, puppicinos from Starbucks, and even a love for vegetables like broccoli – Laila's tastes were as unique as her personality. Her fascination with sitting on the porch while watching the sunset, and listening to the soothing sounds of the night became one of our cherished routines. Her playful spirit brought laughter and light to our home.
Laila wasn't just another dog; she was an incredibly intelligent and obedient companion. Her eagerness to please and innate ability to learn commands without formal training left me in awe. She seemed to anticipate my desires, effortlessly adapting to my wishes. Laila's exceptional intellect and natural talents made her not only a beloved member of our family but also an inspiration to those around us.
Laila's impact extended far beyond our home. Friends who watched her for a weekend were captivated by her charm and well-mannered nature, often leading them to consider adopting a furry friend of their own. Her "soulful eyes" had a unique ability to forge deep connections with everyone she met. Laila possessed an innate sense of empathy, gravitating toward those who needed comfort and support. Her presence was a balm for people feeling troubled, making her a natural candidate for a therapy dog if we ever wanted her to take that route.
Laila's life was full of adventures, from long walks to exploring new places by our side. Just last week, she was chasing our sprinklers and took a trip to the beach, her tail wagging the entire time.
A Lasting Legacy
This week, fate had different plans. A sudden turn of events led us to a heartbreaking truth – Laila was battling cancer and had internal bleeding. Her blood levels had significantly gone in all directions and the vet told us she might only have a week left to live. The shock was overwhelming, and in a matter of days, her health declined so rapidly we could hardly believe what we were seeing.
In her final days, Laila was surrounded by love and family. Different family members traveled great distances to bid her farewell, which was a testament to the incredible impact she had on all of us.
As we said our goodbyes, Laila's calm and serene demeanor offered solace to us during this very difficult time.
Resting Among Daffodils
Laila's journey on this earth may have come to an end, but her spirit lives on in our hearts. She rests now in a tranquil hillside in Mississippi, where daffodils will bloom in her honor. The memories we shared, the joy she brought, and the lessons she taught us will forever be etched in our minds. Laila, my “little pook”, you brought immeasurable happiness into our lives, and your legacy will continue to inspire us to find joy in the simplest of moments.
Rest easy, dear Laila, your memory will forever warm our hearts. 🖤
