Master the Art of Southern Home Style

Learn how to infuse the allure of the south in your own home.

My love of Southern homes started as a child when I would visit my grandparent’s home. My grandmother loved to mix and match bright colors with chintz and porcelain, similar to the Mario Buatta style that was oh-so-popular in the 80’s. She had a sewing machine in the basement and would often make her own duvet covers and pillows to give her rooms a “quick update”. Patterns she used often involved a floral in her favorite colors - pink and green (so classic). Somehow though, even with all of the feminine elements, the house felt balanced by the worn brown leather recliners, the deep green chesterfield velvet sofa, and the large brick mantel.

While I know some of the styles she used would now be considered passé, there are elements of her house that I have come to realize are pillars of Southern style. If you’re wondering how to make your home have the allure of the south, read on to learn how to infuse these elements in your own home.

Create a Welcoming Entryway

The entryway sets the tone for the entire home, serving as a warm invitation to guests. Adorn your front door with a vibrant wreath, and consider adding rocking chairs or a porch swing to create a cozy and inviting atmosphere. Incorporate elements like antique lanterns or gas lamps for a touch of Southern charm that exudes hospitality.

Mix Old With New

Southern home style effortlessly blends the past and present. Incorporate heirloom pieces or antiques alongside modern furniture and accessories to create a captivating juxtaposition. The harmonious blend of old and new adds depth and character to your space, telling the story of generations past while embracing contemporary sensibilities.

Infuse Southern Patterns and Textures

From delicate floral prints to vibrant toile patterns, Southern design embraces the use of patterns and textures. Incorporate these elements through throw pillows, curtains, and upholstery fabrics. Consider adding woven rattan or wicker furniture to create a breezy and relaxed atmosphere that reflects the south’s laid-back charm.

Display Timeless Southern Art and Collectibles

Adorn your walls with timeless Southern artwork, such as landscapes, portraits, or still-life paintings. Showcase family heirlooms, such as vintage china or pottery, on open shelving or display cabinets. These cherished pieces not only add visual interest but also honor your Southern roots and heritage.

Pay Attention to the Details

In Southern home style, attention to detail is paramount. Embellish your space with thoughtful accents like monogrammed linens, delicate lace trimmings, and elegant window treatments. Pay attention to hardware choices, opting for antique brass or oil-rubbed bronze finishes that exude timeless appeal.
