Every few months I travel down to visit my parents in Pensacola, Florida, where I grew up. For all of the years I spent growing up in and visiting a beach town, I had never once set sail! After doing some research on sailing companies around the area, I found Jolly Sailing, which had a nice sized boat and great reviews.
To prepare for my trip, I wanted some clothing that would be comfortable and warm for the fall winds, but also coastal in color tones. I found out about vineyard vines products when I was in college and have loved their clothing since. They are so well made and have stood the test of time. Their clothing is also created with nice materials, which is a huge deciding factor for me when choosing clothing because my skin is insanely sensitive to fabrics.
For this trip I packed a lot of basics. I highly recommend wearing a hat aboard the boat because my hair was all over the place from the wind. It really helped to keep it out of my face. In case of splashes, I also packed a super cute windbreaker to keep me dry. The stretchy white jeans and comfortable pullover I wore made it easy to walk around the boat comfortably.
Jolly Sailing's owners were so upbeat and fun! They were so accomodating and had some treats on board for us when we arrived! We decided on the sunset cruise. It was so relaxing! Feeling the wind in your hair and drinking a boat drink immediately put my mind at ease. They told us that for next time we would be welcome to bring our own snacks and drinks. They also offer dinner or cheese boards for those who want to eat on their adventure. For those who want to go out on the boat, the marina is luckily located write next to a liquor and wine shop, making it easy to make a last minute decision to bring your favorite spirit.
The weather, despite being overcast, was beautiful. I especially love the sunsets in the fall and winter in Florida because they are so colorful. We are planning another trip soon with hopefully no clouds so we can see one of the gorgeous sunsets the panhandle has to offer. They also mentioned they see dolphins quite a bit on their sail tours, which I am hoping to see next time as well!
I developed an entire new respect for sailing. It's truly incredible how the physics of sailing work. I tried to take the wheel for a second and realized just how sensitive every touch is. It's an odd feeling steering the boat, because in order to keep it straight you have to steer against the resistance of the wind. I tried my hand at a few "chores" around the boat, and I think I'm best at tightening the sail and sitting with a drink in my hand. I had friends from high school that were on sailing teams and now I really admire how physical and mental the entire sport is!
Thank you to vineyard vines for sponsoring this post and to Jolly Sailing for a truly remarkable experience.
